The Rockland Avenue school has been named the 78th best high school in the country in the annual rankings. The 2013 report, which was released Tuesday, also rated Yonkers Middle/High School as the 15th best high school in New York.

And for the second year in a row, Saunders Trades & Technical High School earned a silver medal in the rankings, landing in the Top 10 percent of high schools nationwide.

“We applaud the students, staff and families of Yonkers Middle/High School and Saunders Trades & Technical High School for maintaining the schools’ respective gold and silver medal rankings,” Superintendent of Schools Bernard Pierorazio said in an emailed statement.  “Amid staff cuts and limited resources, the two schools have continued to maintain national recognition.”

To compile the rankings, U.S. News evaluates more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were ranked based on state proficiency standards and how well they prepare students for college.

The report noted Yonkers Middle/High School’s School participation in the International Baccalaureate program and its aim to create a “community of caring learners” by encouraging students to participate in community service activities. U.S. News & World Report also pointed to the extracurricular activities available to students, including Habitat for Humanity and Bio-Diversity Club.

Yonkers Middle/High School was one of two Westchester County schools to make the Top 100 list, joining Rye High School, which came in at 61 on the list.

The 2013 ranking continues a strong showing for Yonkers Middle/High School in recent reports, as it was rated the 24th best high school in the country in 2012 and 41st in 2011.

“The honors exemplify the district’s pledge to enhance college readiness and provide college-level courses to our students, who in turn, embrace the challenge and aspire to post-secondary success,” Pierorazio said.
