Police have returned stolen valuables to four area car owners — two each in Cliffside Park and Fairview — but still have several unclaimed items.

“We’re hoping that the owners discover things missing and come forward to claim them,” Sgt. Michael Giampietro told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

An officer spotted the thief around 7 a.m. yesterday near Oakdene and Dewey avenues.

The bandit immediately took off, dropping a red and black backpack that contained none GPS units, 12 pairs sunglasses and $130 in change — all apparently taken from cars, Giampietro said.

A foot chase and search by a Bergen County Police K9 unit failed to find the thief, who left ID in the bag, the sergeant said.

Detectives were reviewing surveillance video from commercial properties in the area as part of their search, he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
