Aquarion Water Co. was scheduled to begin working on Aug. 28, which had drawn complaints about road disruptions in the area.

The Board requested that Aquarion consider postponing the work in that area until early next spring, First Selectman Jim Marpe said.

Aquarion subsequently notified the Public Works Department that it is pulling a permit for a road opening in April and that the work originally planned for this year, has been postponed until that time.

“Myrtle Avenue is a crucial roadway in the downtown area and while there is no ‘good time’ to schedule major infrastructure improvements, the Board believed that the spring of 2018 will be less disruptive to the residents and businesses," Marpe said.

"I appreciated the concerns of the neighbors who objected to the schedule. The original timing coincided with the first days of the new school year and both parents and schoolchildren need time to adjust," he said.

He also this is a critical time for businesses leading up to the holiday season. And District 9 will have a polling location at Town Hall on Election Day, Nov. 8, making access to Myrtle Avenue important.

"This construction work would have had a detrimental effect on these residents, children and business owners had it proceeded as scheduled,” he said.

Marpe thanked Aquarion for "listening to our concerns and accommodating the request to postpone."

In a separate project, Aquarion will begin nighttime construction work on Route 1/Post Road East between Myrtle/Imperial and Compo Road on Monday, Aug. 28.

Post Road is a state roadway under the jurisdiction of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
