Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Andre Wright said that 10-year-old Arianna Davis was hit by a bullet in the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE, after dozens of shots rang out in the area.

Wright said that the family heard gunshots, and later realized that the girl had been struck in her upper body, and she was taken to an area firehouse, where first responders treated her before rushing the child to the hospital, where she was listed in critical condition on Monday, May 15.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

“Obviously we have technicians on the scene, and we have our police officers going door to door to see what happened. This is an all hands on deck effort,” Wright said.

“We have so many detectives from specialized units helping and assisting each other because we have to get to the bottom of this, because this is a heinous act, and we must do whatever it takes to get the suspects into custody.”

The initial investigation determined that the shooter or shooters were likely on a nearby sidewalk, and Davis was caught in the crossfire, though it is not believed she or the family was being targeted.

Dozens of shell casings were reportedly found in the street and on the sidewalk surrounding the site of the shooting.

“Her family is with her now, and we are asking that the community keep the family in their prayers,” Wright continued. “This is Mother’s Day. They were just doing what we were all doing … Celebrating the outstanding work and efforts of Mom. That’s what this day should be about.”

No information about possible suspects have been identified, though Wright said that “once there are credible facts and information,” it will be released.

“I assure you we will get to the bottom of this. This agency will bring all of it’s resources, along with our state and federal partners, to bring the suspects who were involved in this heinous act to justice,” Wright concluded.

“As far as what the community is going through … This is unacceptable. This behavior is unacceptable. To have people in our community firing indiscriminately at whoever they are firing at and with no regard to life is unacceptable.”
