The building, dubbed Metro Green III, will be an 11-story high-rise apartment building that will house residents from diverse backgrounds, officials said. And 73 units will be set aside for those with limited incomes.
Several officials attended the groundbreaking event, including Stamford Mayor David Martin, who praised the project. “We’re proud to have this in our community,” Martin said, adding he was also proud to see affordable and mixed-income units under construction near the downtown train station.
Malkin Holdings Chairman Emeritus Peter Malkin said he acquired the land for the project 30 years ago. An incinerator previously occupied the site, he said.
Speaking from a tent in the complex’s grassy courtyard, Malkin said the space provides a place for residents to unwind. “I think that this courtyard, particularly, is a haven,” he said.
Lynette Powell, who lives in one of the complex’s existing buildings, said she was grateful to live close to where she grew up in the South End.
“I love it here,” Powell told those gathered at the groundbreaking. The complex feels like a community, she said, with events such as an Easter egg hunt as well as Christmas and Halloween parties.
Connecticut Housing Commissioner Evonne Klein said the project allows those who work in the area to live in the area. “It keeps our workforce right here in Fairfield County,” Klein said.
The building will achieve LEED for homes certification and will contribute to the overall site’s LEED neighborhood development “gold” certification, according to officials.
The new building is the third and final phase of a 231-unit mixed-income development completed over the past 10 years by the partnership of Jonathan Rose Cos. and Malkin Holdings.
Company officials said studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments will be available for rent.
While officials held the groundbreaking Tuesday, construction is already underway. The building will be ready the summer of 2017, according to a sign on the site.
