Smallen House Comes to Market

The town of New Canaan is a dream come true for lovers of mid-century modern homes. And any of you following design trends will know that mid-century anything is totally “in.”

A few weeks back I featured Philip Johnson’s Alice Ball house, a fine example of the style. Now we have a new modern home that's just come to market, designed by Hugh Smallen, part of the second wave of modernist architects to live and practice in New Canaan. Smallen received his architecture degree at Yale and also trained the Institute of Design in Brooklyn. A brief stint at the renowned firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in New York convinced him that he was a country boy at heart, so he and wife, Kathryn, picked up and moved to New Canaan where he opened his architectural practice, as well as a contemporary furniture store, “Design Collaborative.”

The Smallen House is a classic example of the mid-century modern style, with clean lines and lots of glass bringing the outdoors into the home’s living space. There is a dramatic Great Room with an expansive wall of glass overlooking the patio and a sitting wall. The kitchen and master bedroom have cathedral ceilings, and the foyer is double-height. The home has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and there is the potential to create a studio or guest room in the detached three-car garage. The house is close to town and sits on almost three acres. The asking price is $1,795,000.
