Performances are scheduled at the Massey Theater on Greenwich Academy's campus at 200 N. Maple Ave. in Greenwich. Shows are Thursday, Nov. 20, Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22. The curtain goes up all three nights at 7 p.m.
The play won multiple Tony Awards, both for the original 1972 Broadway production and the current revival.
Director Brian Borowka and conductor/musical director Erica McCants brainstormed on which show to stage for the academy's fall season.
“We looked for a family-friendly show that appeals to all ages, but is recent enough that the cast is excited about it,” Borowka said. “It’s a meaningful show about finding what you want to do with your life. This will resonate with audiences, in particular our students.”
The musical, which features a score by “Wicked” composer Stephen Schwartz, includes well-known songs such as "Magic to Do" and "Corner of the Sky." The score has “a little bit of everything,” according to McCants. “There are songs that have classical influences as well as songs that have more of a rock feel. They are so beautifully written. You can’t help but find yourself humming.”
The star of the show is a young prince, Pippin, who is seeking something more in life. Along the way, he encounters a group of traveling performers who guide him on his quest.
In addition to a cast of Academy and Brunswick Upper School student actors, this production will also feature Bob Fosse-inspired student choreography performed by members of the Greenwich Academy Dance Corps; as well as a full pit orchestra.
