New Canaan High School Named Among Most Challenging In U.S.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Seven high schools in Fairfield County made the Washington Post's list of America’s most challenging.

Greenwich High School, which was named the most challenging in Fairfield County, came in at No. 3 in the state and No. 520 nationwide on the national newspaper's list.

According to The Washington Post report, each score was based on "the number of college-level tests given at a school in the previous calendar year divided by the number of graduates that year."

"A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates,” The Washington Post story said.

In all, 2,302 high schools across the United States made the cut; 14 of them were in Connecticut.

Greenwich High School led Fairfield County with an index of 3.428.

Weston High School, which came in at No. 4 in the state and a No. 576 in the nation, was next with an index of 3.288.

Ridgefield High School followed at No. 5 in the state and No. 726 nationwide. It had an index of 2.966.

Staples High School in Westport came in a No. 7 in the and No. 801 nationwide. It had an index of 2.821.

Coming in at No. 8 in the state was New Canaan High School. It was No. 824 in the nation and had an index of 2.767.

Wilton High School was ranked No. 9 in the state and No. 1,047 in the nation. Its index was 2.409.

Lastly, Westhill High School in Stamford was ranked No. 10 in in the state and 1,309 nationwide. It had an index of 2.077.

The remainder of those listed in Connecticut’s Top 14:

1: Connecticut IB Academy, East Hartford (5.905)

2: Conard High School, West Hartford. (3.749)

6: Farmington High School, Farmington. (2.910)

11: Robert E. Fitch High School, Groton. (1.870)

12: East Lyme High School, East Lyme. (1.747)
