Luizzi has served as interim superintendent since July 1, when Mary Kolek retired.

"Dr. Luizzi has proven himself to be a visionary, highly qualified, and energetic leader," Board of Education Chairman Hazel Hobbs said in a statement. "We are thrilled that he will continue to lead us, providing continuity as we continue our efforts and commitment to educational excellence. Dr. Luizzi is a strong leader with the skills and passion required to lead the district."

In a statement, Luizzi said, "I am humbled and honored by the trust the Board of Education and the New Canaan community have shown me by appointing me as the next superintendent of schools. As interim superintendent these past months, it has been inspiring to see the impressive accomplishments of our students and staff throughout the district. Thanks to the commitment of staff, parents, and the community, the New Canaan Public Schools are truly outstanding, and I am eager and excited to continue this great work as the next superintendent of schools."

He has 18 years of experience in education. Luizzi began his teaching career at Newtown High School as an English teacher. He also served as manager of technology operations for the Newtown school district. He then progressed through a number of administrative positions in the Brookfield school system, where he served as the principal of Brookfield High School for five years. He then served as principal of New Canaan High School for three years.

Throughout his career, Luizzi has been engaged in higher education. In 2006, he completed his doctor of education degree at Teachers College at Columbia University. Soon thereafter, he became an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University and at the University of Connecticut, teaching classes in School and District Leadership, Curriculum Development and Design, School Climate and Culture, and Educational Policy, among others.

A search will begin for a permanent principal for New Canaan High School. Luizzi, along with director of human resources Gary Kass, will be leading the search and selection process, the Board of Education said in a statement.
