NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Moving on to a new school may be a difficult transition, but Head of School Tim Bazemore, said he knows New Canaan Country School's Class of 2013 has the courage to handle it.

During the closing exercise earlier this month the head of school reminded the 42 ninth-graders leaving, that they started their time at New Canaan Country School with 9/11 and ended it with the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the bombing at the Boston Marathon, a news release said.

“But it is not just physical courage that you have learned, you have also learned moral courage,” Bazemore said in the release, “ … and the third form of courage, which is less obvious, courage of the heart, the courage to carry on and to be resilient. Your class has been called on to learn courage of the heart more than most. It is, I believe, your greatest attribute as a class and potentially the most important thing we have taught you.”

Virginia Mahoney received the Robert Gamble Award, and Luke Bazemore received the Paul Johansen Award, the release said. The awards are named after former students who battled fatal illnesses while attending the school, the release said.

The Class of 2013 will be heading off to the following high schools: Brien McMahon High School, Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy, Emma Willard School, Episcopal High School, Greens Farms Academy, Greenwich Academy, Holderness School, King School, Loomis Chaffee School, Masters School, Millbrook School, New Canaan High School, North American Hockey Academy, Rye Country Day School , Ridgefield High School, St. Luke’s School, St. Paul’s School, Suffield Academy, Taft School and Westminster School.
