The award is presented to theatre groups whose productions most completely fulfill the stated purpose in each of the following theatre divisions: professional, community, college, secondary school and children’s.
The annual Moss Hart Memorial Award has a two-fold purpose: The first is to honor the memory of Moss Hart, dramatist and director, for his wit and sensitivity, for his unconquerable enthusiasm for life and for his work in the theatre.
The award's second purpose is to recognize and encourage outstanding theatrical productions throughout New England of playscripts that present affirmative views of human courage and dignity, that have strong literary and artistic merit, and which in their productions exemplify fresh, imaginative and creative treatment within the intent of the playwright.
The New England Theatre Conference, in making the annual Moss Hart Memorial Award, seeks to encourage artistic growth and the highest standards of excellence in theatre.
“The Apple Tree” is a series of three musical playlets with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Bock and Harnick with contributions from Jerome Coopersmith. Each act has its own storyline, but all three are tied together by a common theme -- someone who believes that they want something, but once they get what they wanted they realize that it wasn't what they wanted after all.
The first act is based on Mark Twain’s "The Diary of Adam and Eve," the second act is based on Frank R. Stockton’s "The Lady and the Tiger" the third act is based on Jules Feiffer’s "Passionella."
The last show of the year for the New Canaan High School Theatre Department is “A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine," and will be Friday, June 3, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 4, at 2 and 7 p.m. It is a musical comedy of two one-act plays with a book and lyrics by Dick Vosburgh and music by Frank Lazarus.
