The New Canaan High School TSA/TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) teams recently competed in the national competition and both Varsity and JV brought home top honors.

The competition, hosted by the University of New Haven on March 15, pit  teams from high schools all over the nation in a paper and pencil competition about a series of engineering problems centered around a particular theme.

This year’s theme was “The Power of Engineering,” and the students, as teams of eight, used their engineering skills to tackle challenges in areas focused on alternative energy, smart houses, the environment, solar, nuclear, wind, and water bringing to light issues that engineers face every day.

Although the results of the national portion of the competition will not be available for another few weeks, the State of Connecticut results are complete.

The all-day event concluded with the Rams Varsity ‘A’ and Junior Varsity Team earning “Best in State” Honors, while the Varsity ‘B’ team placed third. This is the sixth year in a row that the JV took first in the State.

The Varsity ‘A’ state champions are Shaan Appel, Sarah Owen, Steven DiCarlo, Steve Windas, Charlie Pitteway, captain Ted O’Rourke, Patrick Hompe and Chris Reik.

The Junior Varsity ‘A’ state champions are Jackson Appelt, Jason Campe, Tyler Hill,  Bhaskar Abhiraman, Michael St. George, Cameron Rhind, Wiliam Curren and captain Andrew Shizari.
