NEW CANAAN, Conn. The last day of classes at East Elementary School had Ella Goodman feeling mixed emotions. Like many of her classmates, 10-year-old Ella is excited to be done with school and to be on summer break.
But Wednesday was also her final day at East School. When school resumes in late August, Ella and her twin sister Alexi will start as fifth-graders at Saxe Middle School .
I feel happy and a little sad, Ella said, smiling and shrugging at the same time. Im upset I wont get to see any of my teachers anymore. But Im happy because Ill get to go swimming and go to camp.
Even under cloudy and rainy skies, summer was on the mind of East School kids at dismissal time as they waved goodbye and hugged their teachers before looking ahead to warm-weather fun.
Jayda Mysogland, 8, smiled brightly as she left East with her grandmother Susie. Both were dressed in green Jayda for Easts annual School Spirit Day, and Susie just by coincidence.
Im happy because school is over, Jayda said, carrying a paper bag filled with her school projects. Grandmother Susie rubbed her head and congratulated the rising third-grader on her classroom success. She had a wonderful year. Susie said.
Camp also awaits Michael Rivas, 7, happily done with second grade, and his little sister Lili, 6, who will be a first-grader in the fall. Michael says hes scared about going into third grade. Going to camp and playing with his brother Steves iPad brings a smile to his face. Bye, school, Michael and Lili said, waving to East Schools front doors before heading out.
Their mom, Sara Rivas, said shes not worried. We had plans in place, and were good to go, she said. Camp starts next Monday.
