New Canaan Schools Closed Wednesday; Cleanup Continues

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Schools in New Canaan will remain closed Wednesday as emergency officials continue cleaning up the damage left by Hurricane Sandy.

Word on whether schools will open Thursday will be determined later, school officials said. St. Aloysius School will likely remain closed because it relies on New Canaan school buses to transport its students.

New Canaan Country School will also remain closed Wednesday. St. Luke’s School announced Tuesday that the school will remain closed Wednesday and Thursday.

The town was still working to reopen several roads blocked by downed trees and power lines.

New Canaan Library will remain open for extended hours until 10 p.m., Director Alice Knapp said, as long as half the town is without power.  As of 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, 5,927 Connecticut Light & Power customers in New Canaan - 70 percent - were without power.

The New Canaan YMCA will be open until 10 p.m. Tuesday for town residents and will be open from 5:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The New Canaan Nature Center will remain closed until damage to the woods can be assessed. Many town stores have reopened for business.
