New Canaan saw increases in students at goal in all subjects in third- and fifth- grades, and increases in several subjects in fourth-, sixth- and eighth-grades. While statewide, 2013 CMT [Connecticut Mastery Tests] results declined in the percentage of students scoring at goal in all areas tested -- reading, writing, math and science.

“Student performance data on the CMT show decreases in all grades and content areas as compared to last year,” a release from the State Department of Education, said. The CMTs were taken in March by all public school students in grades three to eight.

The state Department of Education blamed the transition to Common Core standards in many districts is a reason for the drop.

On the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, taken by 10th-graders, the percentage of students at Goal in New Canaan increased in math, and science and decreased in reading and writing. Statewide there was an increase in each subject, except for writing, which saw a decrease.
