NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Mikey and Lili Rivas could hardly contain their joy as they walked out of New Canaan’s East School on Thursday afternoon.

“Summer vacation,” shouted Lili, 7, running in a grassy area in front of the school while her mom Sara watched with a smile.

The Rivas children and hundreds of others set forth on summer vacation Thursday, saying goodbye to teachers and homework for about two months and preparing for trips and other fun activities. New Canaan closed the 2011-12 school year with a half-day at all five buildings. East School cleared out quickly after the 1:15 p.m. dismissal, with only a few kids and parents around before 2 p.m.

“I like summer because you get to relax a lot,” said Mikey, who will be a fourth-grader when East School reopens Aug. 28.

“And you get to sleep in,” Lili added.
