“It’s a bummer,” said Ellie, 15, a student at New Canaan High School, who spent Tuesday afternoon working at the New Canaan Toy Store.
April 15 and 16 will now be school days in New Canaan after last weekend’s blizzard forced schools to close on Friday and Monday. New Canaan schools have lost nine days so far this year because of severe weather. Six of them were lost in October and November following Hurricane Sandy. Ellie says she may still have plans to travel during that week.
Bill McManus said he still expects to take his family on vacation during the April break. That may mean his daughter Lily, a second-grader at South School, may have to bring her homework with her during their trip to Florida. It would be difficult – and costly – to alter plans now.
“She’ll try to make up the work,” McManus said, though he conceded a loss of the entire vacation might force him to re-evaluate his plans. Three more weather-related closings would wipe out the entire April break. “Missing a full week is probably a game changer,” he said.
Jennifer O’Brien, at New Canaan Library with her 11-year-old daughter, Jane, was not too distressed about the change, saying she did not have anything big planned for the break.
“You can’t change the weather,” she said. “It’s not the end of the world.”
