The New Canaan 5th-grade Red team started off its season with a 21-0 victory over Darien on Saturday. The defense got New Canaan on the board early when Luke Nolan wrapped up the Darien quarterback for a safety to put the team up, 2-0. Quintin O'Connell added to the lead when he scampered for a 40-yard touchdown on the next offensive play, which was set up by strong blocks from Peter Radman, Garret Braden and Ben Schneider.
Charlie Cunney was next to strike for New Canaan when he took a reverse for 45 yards for a touchdown, on a hole opened up by Christian Sibbett and Augo Frey.
The defense was tough all day. Sam Deney, Carl Mazabras, Timmy Hardy and Clarke Grigsby all made key tackles. New Canaan punched in one more touchdown on an O'Connell run, and Teddy Manges converted the extra point.
