Easton Triathlete Takes 3rd In International Championships

EASTON, Conn. -- Easton’s Chris Thomas finished third Sunday in his age group at the International Triathlon Union Standard World Championships in Chicago.

Thomas, owner of Personal Training Professionals in Southport, took third in the 40-44 age group. He finished the course in 1:58:26.

The race consisted of a 1,500 meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 6.7 mile (10.8 kilometer) run. Mark Harms of Madison, Wisc., won the race in 1:54:50.

Thomas’ podium finished helped the United States complete a staggering medal haul. U.S. athletes won 16 gold medals, 20 silver and 15 bronze.

Thomas missed second place by a mere 19 seconds. Ronan Pavoni of Panama ran a strong 38:13 in the run, overtaking Thomas, who ran 38:50.

Thomas trailed the leaders by three minutes coming out of the swim, but posted the second fastest time on the bike and the eighth fastest time on the run.

It was the first medal at an ITU World Championships for Thomas.
