Undefeated New Canaan Football Team Meets Trinity On Saturday

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Brien McMahon, Fairfield Prep and Danbury face important football games this weekend as all three teams try to remain in the race for league and state playoff berths.

The Senators (7-1) meet St. Joseph (7-2) in Trumbull on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Crusaders (7-2) play Xavier (6-3) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown.

Brien McMahon is 7-0 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference, and could reach the league title game with a win over the Cadets. McMahon’s last FCIAC title came in 1995.

The Senators are also seeking a berth in the Class LL tournament, where they are currently ranked fourth. McMahon has won seven straight since a season-opening loss to Wilbur Cross of New Haven. The Senators are led by a balanced rushing attack featuring Kentrell Snider, Tim Hinton and Tyre Holman, who have combined for 31 touchdowns and over 2,300 yards.

The Jesuits (7-2) have won four straight games and are currently fifth in the Class LL football rankings. Prep reached the Class LL championship game last year before losing to Southington. Quarterback Colton Smith is having another big year for Prep, with 848 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns along with 12 touchdown passes and 1,230 yards.

The surprising Hatters (7-2) play at Greenwich on Friday at 7 p.m. and are also in the Class LL playoff race. Danbury is currently ranked seventh in Class LL. The top eight teams in each division make the state playoffs.The Hatters have won four straight games under first-year coach Mark Ecke. Greenwich (6-3) has won six straight games.

Undefeated and top-ranked New Canaan meets Trinity Catholic on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Stamford. Darien, also undefeated and ranked No. 3, hosts North Haven on Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
