Fall State Playoffs Moved; Football Schedule Scrambled

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Hurricane Sandy has affected just about every business and institution in Fairfield County, and sports are not immune. The state tournaments for boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls volleyball and girls swimming have all been pushed back one week because of the storm.

The boys soccer state tournament will now begin on Nov. 8, while the girls tournament gets underway Nov. 9. The state championships for the boys and girls will take place on Nov. 23 and 24.

The field hockey tournament will now start on Nov. 7. Girls volleyball will get its tournament underway on Nov. 8. However, those two sports will still hold their championship games on the originally scheduled date of Nov. 17.

The girls diving trials and championships will take place on Nov. 7 and 8.

The Class M and Class S girls swimming championships will be held on Nov. 13 at Wesleyan University and Southern Connecticut State University, respectively. The Class LL and Class L girls swimming championships will be held on Nov. 14 at Wesleyan University and Southern Connecticut State University, respectively.

All regular season varsity football games scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been postponed until Nov. 8. The games that had been scheduled for Week Nine will now be played on Nov. 13. Teams out of the playoff hunt are reportedly looking to push that game back further, however.

The Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference football championship is now scheduled for Nov. 17. However, if Staples and Greenwich play for the conference title, the championship will likely take place on Thanksgiving since those two teams are already scheduled to meet.
