NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Former New Canaan basketball star Gary Liberatore will be among the recipients of the Gold Key from the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance at the group’s annual dinner in April.

Liberatore, a resident of Norwalk and a teacher in Stamford, will receive the award on April 28 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. He will be honored along with Westport’s Laddie Lawrence, the successful cross country and track coach at Staples High School; former basketball star Mike Gminski; John Blomstrann, a soccer coach at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs and UConn field hockey coach Nancy Stevens.

Liberatore led the state in scoring with 24 points per game for New Canaan High School in 1962. He hit the game-winning free throws to give the Rams the Class B state championship, the school's last state basketball title.

Liberatore further distinguished himself at the University of New Haven, where he averaged 31.7 points during his four-year career. His 3,176 points is still a New England record. He was the New England Collegiate Player of the Year in 1965-66, and received the Bob Cousy Award as the best player in New England under 6-feet tall. He was also a National  Association of Intercollege Athletics All-American.

Tickets to the Gold Key Dinner, which begins at 4 p.m., can be purchased by contacting either CSWA President George Albano of The (Norwalk) Hour at 203-434-2320 or Vice President and Dinner Chairman Bob Ehalt of The New Haven Register at Ehalt.Bob@sbcglobal.net.

Gary Liberatore is one of the finest men you ever would want to meet. The true professional in every aspect from being a Dad, being a Teacher for over 30 years or just being a fan rooting for a local athlete to do their best. Congrats Gary, you well deserve this honor.
