The New Canaan Black basketball team, sponsored by Mad Dog Radio, went 1-2 in a busy weekend of action in the Fairfield County Basketball League .
New Canaan opened the weekend with a 71-42 loss to Greenwich. Claude Chandonnet scored 17 points for New Canaan, including several three-pointers, and Tyler Edwards added 10. The Rams had difficulty solving Greenwich's press and fell behind, 28-11, against one of the best eighth-grade teams in the league.
Brandon Abate made a strong comeback from a head injury for NC Black against New Fairfield as it posted a 38-27 win. Abate made some terrific hustle plays, including an end-to-end run for a hoop and later hitting off a give-and-go pass from Paul Hagopian. Justin Meichner and Deven Appel played well defensively, while Michael Kraus shot well from outside and Edwards commanded the boards with rebounds and big shot blocks. Abate lead all scorers with 10, Chandonnet and Appel contributed six points each.
St. Teresa White stopped New Canaan on Sunday, 51-40. St. Teresa's full-court press stymied New Canaan and took a 29-24 halftime lead. Chandonnet scored 17 points for New Canaan, and Meichner added eight. Abate, Hagopian and Kraus also made nice offensive contributions for New Canaan. Appel and Simpson also played well inside as New Canaan tried to minimize the loss of Zach Allen, who miss weekend action with an injury.
