NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Two fifth-grade football teams from New Canaan shared the league championship in the Fairfield County Football League.
New Canaan Red, coached by Mark Smith, finished 8-1. New Canaan Black, coached by Denis LaPolice, finished 9-1.
The teams shared the title after both won semifinal games. NC Red beat Wilton Blue in the semifinals, 6-0. NC Black defeated Wilton White, 6-0. Wilton White entered the game undefeated and was the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
New Canaan Red surrendered just 40 points all season, the lowest in the fifth-grade league. Ryan McAleer’s 70-yard touchdown run in the first half accounted for the only touchdown in the semifinal win over Wilton. Andrew Smith had two interceptions to lead the defensive effort along with Xander Arnone and Tyler Saitta. Lee Anderson coached the defensive unit for NC Red.
NC Red also had one of the league’s top offenses, and was led by the line play of Charlie Mullaney, Greg Korsun, Ben Thorsheim, Andrew Morse, Jack Anderson, Steven Hoge, Michael Young, Zach Boland, AJ Eason and Ethan Niang.
NC Black ended the season on an eight-game winning streak.
New Canaan Red’s team is Colbey Gardiner, Andrew Smith, Andrew Eason, Jarom Hobi, Connor Cloud, Augustus Larson, Charlie Mac Watson, Nick Gilio, Michael McDonnell, Tyler Saitta, Zachary Boland, Alex Arnone, Ryan McAleer, Thomas Marshall, Steven Hoge, Ben Thorsheim, Griffen Dayton, Owen Lynch, Jack Anderson, Nicky Hoge, Michael Young, Charles Mullaney, Ethan Niang, Andrew Morse, Greg Korsun and Alec Kazlauskas.
New Canaan Black’s roster is Luke Morton, Zachary LaPolice, Brandon Sechan, Diego Ferreira, Conor Mastey, Tighe Hoey, Dean Ciancio, Dylan McDonald, Patrick Colwell, Robert Evans, Nick Brown, Thomas Doster, Jack Finnigan, Matthew Rigione, Bailey Williams, Alexander Weissman, Kyle Russell, Jack Hynes, Charlie Knight, Jaden Konspore, Luke McPhillips, James Gilman, Ryan Lytle, Andrew Charkales, Michael Canning, William Pirrone and Joe McClain.
