NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaans boys lacrosse team had won 16 straight games and the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title en route to Saturdays Class M championship game against arch-rival Darien.
But for the second time this season, the Rams could not find a way to slow down the Blue Wave. No. 1 seeded Darien used four goals from sophomore Peter Lindley and three from senior Henry West to defeat the third-seeded Rams, 11-5, at New Canaan High School.
The Rams, who last won a state title in 2003, have lost their last four appearances in the state championship game. They also lost to Wilton in the 2011 title game.
Darien jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Tim Murphy, West and Case Matheis with 2:45 to play in the first quarter. Two goals by Michael Bossidy got the Rams within 3-2.
Lindley scored as time expired in the first quarter to stem New Canaans momentum. The Blue Wave scored three second-period goals for a 7-2 halftime lead, and the Rams never seriously challenged thereafter. John Brainards third-period goal and Peter Kraus goal with 11:05 left in the fourth cut New Canaans deficit to 7-4, but Lindley scored twice within a 1:19 span and the Blue Wave were on their way to their seventh title in eight years. Matt Blasco scored New Canaans final goal.
New Canaan finished the season 19-4, with two of those losses to Darien. The Blue Wave also defeated New Canaan during the regular season, 13-3.
