NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan High boys ice hockey team erased a 2-0 second period deficit, forced overtime and picked up its second victory of the season on Tuesday. Tyler Manchuck netted the game-winner in overtime to give the Rams a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Play was just about even in the first period, with each squad getting off six shots and neither going to the penalty box. The Lancers were the first to light the lamp, as Garrett Gintoli scored just 1:07 into the second period. Sal Serano got his stick on a nifty behind-the-back pass from Dave Canfarotta to put Notre Dame up 2-0 early in the second.
New Canaan finally awoke with a goal from Jack Stanton less than 30 seconds later. Peter Reinhardt knotted the game at 2-2 with a goal in the third period, setting up Manchucks heroics.
Rams goalie Chris Koennecke made 22 saves as New Canaan outshot Notre Dame, 32-24.
New Canaan has won two in a row to pull its season record to 2-2. The Rams host a powerful Hamden squad on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Darien Ice Rink.
