NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan Crew, which competes out of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, racked up 10 medals at the Northeast Junior District Championships and qualified six boats for USRowing’s Youth National Championships in June.

New Canaan’s medal count was second to the Community Rowing in Boston, the largest boathouse in the nation. Every boat that New Canaan cleared to finals won a bid to Nationals.

New Canaan’s gold medalists included the Women’s Quad team of Cara Hoelzl, Mary Campbell, Claire Campbell and Bea Tobey. Mary Campbell also picked up a bronze in the Women’s Single.

Tobey and partner Veronica Hoeft won silver in the Women’s Lightweight Double to earn a berth at the national regatta.

“Their hard work over the season, their mental toughness and their physical strength helped Mary and Bea succeed in not one but two events. I am very proud of them,” coach Yan Vengerovskiy said.

Graham Mink, Mike Senf, Glen Wolyner, and Stephen Gerasimoff earned their berth to nationals with silver medals in the Men’s Quad. Blake Lange and Merritt Culman also won silver in the Men’s Lightweight Double and will join their team mates in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on June 5.

Ashwini Rao coxed the Men’s Lightweight Four, where senior Carson West  joined juniors Jackson Vogt, Jack Hall-Tipping and Max Kantor in a boat that was put together just before the Long Island Sprint Championships. They won both their preliminary heat and their semifinal. But they had a bad start and had to come from behind to win bronze medals and their tickets to Oak Ridge.

Alex Yanoff, Lauren Howe, Jenna Froland, and Ekaterina Dyakova won a gold medal in the Second Women’s Youth 4x, beating their closest competitor by more than 10 seconds.

Justin Podlesak, Nicholas Reynoso, Gabriel Marsan, Chazz Lucenti won the same event for the boys.  Philipp Bogdanov, Paul Gelhaus, David Orner, and Daniel Cone, a novice crew, stepped up in competition and took a bronze in the Second Men’s 4x.

David Dayya, Connor deMayo, Luke Brand, Ethan Geller, Griffin Hall, Lucas Forlivio, Riley Marsh and Aidan Bridwell along with their cox, Charlotte Rosenberg won gold medals for their efforts in the 2nd Novice 8. Dylan Rhymaun, Phillip MacNeal, Preston Troxell, Jamie Stebbins, John Mudd, Brian James, Josh Klapper, David Carratu and cox Joseph Bartolotta won silver in the Men’s Youth 3rd Novice 8.

“To have done so well across the board - sweep, scull, novice, jv and varsity - it was a very good day,’’ Vengerovskiy said.
