New Canaan Gymnasts Soar To Top Of Podium At New England Invitational

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien YMCA Gymnasts returned as all-around champions from the New England Invitational last weekend in Glastonbury.

The athletes competed in Levels 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Individual All-Around(AA) champions for their age group and level included Kayla Koproski, Emily Rizzi, Anna Altier, Abigail O’Brien, Sofia Iuteri, Anna Moss, Lucy Collins, Leilani Nguyen, Holly McGoldrick and Kelsey Fedorko.

Fedorko swept first place, winning the AA and all four events, including scoring 9.2 on floor, in the Level 9 Junior competition, while teammate Gianna Cardini took third across the board.

The Level 7 squad captured first in the team competition by a huge margin of nearly four points.

All the 10-12 age group, competitors were from Darien, with Leilani Nguyen taking first AA, second on bars, fourth on floor and tying Caterina Pye for second on vault and Saskia Chermayeff for third on beam. Caterina was also second on beam and floor and third AA. Chermayeff, competing in two events due to injury, also swung to the bars title with 9.1.

Sofia DeStefano earned second AA, first on vault, tied with Gabriela Pye for third on bars and was co-champ on floor, with sister Isabella. Isabella was also third on vault and fourth on floor. Gabriela Pye also placed fourth on vault and beam. Kate Wolters won the beam title with 9.55 and placed third on floor.

Holly McGoldrick achieved a trio of titles, winning bars, beam, and the AA and took second on vault in the age 13 group. In 14 and older, Lana Schmidt took second on vault, beam and floor and fourth AA.

Lucy Collins led the champion Level 6 team, taking the AA with 37.075 as well as the bars and beam titles and placing third on vault in the 13s group.

In the 15 and up group, Sofia Fea was the vault champ with 9.3 and took third on bars, fourth on beam and second AA. Coming back from injury, Lily Fairleigh competed only on beam and placed third.

Anna Moss scored a huge 37.25 AA in the 9-11 group and placed second on floor, third on beam, fourth on bars and sixth on vault. Abigail Nevin took fourth AA and first on vault, floor, and beam where she scored a stunning 9.85. Nima Rahbar tumbled to fifth on floor, sixth on beam and seventh on vault and AA. Emma Kelly was fifth on beam and seventh on floor, while Melina Cardini earned her meet high score on floor.

In the 12s group, Megan Cutler earned third on beam, fifth on vault, seventh on bars and sixth AA. Emma Neaderland was fourth on vault and second on floor, while Sommer Schmidt took eighth on bars.

Sofia Iuteri paced the small but successful team champ Level 5 squad, winning the vault, beam and AA titles with 36.725 and taking third on beam and bars in the 11s group. In the 12 and up group, Olivia Perkins sprang to the vault title with 9.25, placed third on bars and second on beam, floor, and AA. Tetyana Banaryk took fourth on bars and beam and fifth AA.

In the 9-10 group Julia Decsi won the beam title and placed second AA, fourth on bars and floor and tied Lauren Smith for third on vault. Smith was also third on bars and AA and tumbled to second on floor. Anna Primmer took second on vault and third on floor.

The first place Level 4 team was paced by Anna Altier, who won the bars, beam and AA titles with 37.075 and placed second on floor and fifth on vault in the 10s group.

Tanner Generoso was the vault champ as well as second on beam and AA, third on floor and sixth on bars. Ava Licata took third on beam, fourth on floor and fifth on bars and AA.

Alexa Bell placed 8th on floor, while Annelise Enters was seventh on vault and ninth on floor. Lindy Mueller earned her meet high score on floor.

Ellie Davies was the beam champ with 9.175 and took third on floor in the 8-9 group. In the 11s, Abigail O’Brien captured the vault, floor, and AA titles with 36.75 and placed second on beam and seventh on bars. Brianna Barrientos took second on vault, fourth on bars and ninth on floor and AA, while Alannah Morris vaulted to sixth

In the 12 and older group, Alexandra Decsi swung to sixth on bars and Kira McCreesh was second on vault.

Taking third in the team competition when this was the first meet ever for many of the Level 3s was quite an accomplishment. In the youngest group of 6-7-year-olds, Kayla Koproski, was the floor and AA winner with 36.55 and placed second on bars, fourth on beam and fifth on vault.

Tess Hennigan was the beam champ with 9.55 as well as second on vault and AA and fifth on bars. Taylor Davies earned third on beam, fifth AA, seventh on floor and sixth on vault and bars.

Emily Rizzi topped the podium in the 8s group, winning the beam, floor and AA titles with a huge 37.85 and placing second on bars and vault. Olivia Davis took second on beam, seventh on vault and third on bars, floor, and AA. Ava Telgheder earned third on beam and eighth on vault.

For the 9 Junior group, Stella Nehro soared to first on vault with 9.6, placed third AA, sixth on bars and tied Katie Cutler for sixth on floor and third on beam. Cutler also earned fourth on vault and bars and fifth AA. Katie Primmer vaulted to second, took fourth on floor and seventh on bars and beam.

Alexandra Kuras took second on both floor and beam, fifth on vault and seventh AA in the 9 Senior group. Isabella Koproski earned third on vault, sixth on bars and fifth on floor and AA in the 10s group.

For the 11 and up group, Chloe Sernick took sixth on vault and beam, seventh on floor and tenth AA. Theodora Tertiropoulos was sixth on vault, tenth on bars and eleventh on beam and floor.
