NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swimming team won the High Point trophy for the third consecutive year at the Senior East Zone Meet held in Binghamton, N.Y. earlier this month.

The meet featured 93 athletes from 11 teams from throughout the eastern United States.  “I am so proud of each and every one of our swimmers,” said head coach Jen Muzyk. “They worked very hard to make this meet an overwhelming success.”

The Aquianas brought two squads to the team event.  Gold was awarded to the team of Emma Baranski, Renee Collett, Erin Wheeler, Rebecca Trinklein, Emily Roney, Eliza Sturgeon, Isabella Montgomery, Alice Chidley, Alie Lin and Camilla Kline.  Sixth place went to the team of Diya Banerjee, Emma Flynn, Molly Flynn, Hannah Vogel, Ophelie Tousignant, Teresa Salamone and Sierra Rojas-Thomas.

In the Trio event, out of 22 routines, Collett, Wheeler and Roney earned gold.  Fourth place went to Trinklein, Sturgeon and Jenn O’Neill.  Fifth place went to Lin, Montgomery and Banerjee.  Kline, Emma Flynn and Vogel came in 12th.  Lauren LaPorta, Jessica Moss and Katie Greco came in 16th.

In the Duet event, out of 24 routines, Baranski and Collett earned gold.  Wheeler and Trinklein took the silver.  Montgomery and Chidley placed 4th.  Banerjee and Tousignant placed 6th.

In Solo, out of 24 routines, Baranski, Roney, Sturgeon and Lin placed 1st , 5th , 8th and 11th respectively. Baranski, Collett, Roney, Wheeler, Montgomery, Trinklein and Sturgeon were all named to the 16 member Senior East Zone All Star team.

Baranski was named East Zone Swimmer of the Year and awarded the Kim Miller Scholarship, which is given each year to a high school senior who plans to participate in collegiate level synchronized swimming in the fall and who shows excellence in academics, leadership and service in the image of Kim Miller, an East Zone synchronized swimmer who succumbed to cancer before entering college.

"Emma is a special swimmer,” said Muzyk.  “Coaching her has been a great experience. I have learned just as much from her as she has from me over the last three years."

The Aquianas earned 80 points, winning the Senior East Zone High Point Trophy. The Buffalo Swimkins scored 36 points followed by Tonawanda Aquettes with 30 points, ANA Synchro with 25 points, Westfield YMCA Aquaducks with 3 points and the CDYMCA Sculpins with 2 points. The Aquianas have won the Senior East Zone High Point Trophy 12 out of the last 13 years.

This meet was a qualifying event for U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships to be held in Greensboro, N.C. in April.  Eighteen Aquianas are now qualified for this elite level competition.
