New Canaan Synchronized Swimmers Second At East Meet

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swimming Junior team competed in the East Zone Junior Championships earlier this month in Pennsburg, Pa.

A total of 140 athletes from 19 teams throughout the northeastern U.S. competed at the meet. The Aquianas, represented by only eight individuals comprising five routines, earned second place in the high point standings. Three swimmers, Alex Poteet, Eliza Sturgeon and Katie Farrell, were named to the East Zone Junior All-Star team.

"It was amazing to place second with only eight swimmers competing,” assistant coach Thea Bardin said. “With so few swimmers, we needed each one to make a huge contribution, and each and every girl came through and scored a significant number of points for the team.  I'm incredibly proud of these girls."

The trio of Lauren La Porta, Jessica Moss and Katie Greco earned fifth with a score of 124.2127.  In the duet event Ophelie Tousignant and Diya Banerjee won silver with a score of 130.3960.  In solo Sturgeon won silver with a score of 133.2910, Poteet earned bronze with a score of 130.9870 and Farrell earned fourth with a score of 130.9270.

In the figures event Sturgeon, Poteet and Farrell placed third, seventh and eighth, respectively.

The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas are currently training for the East Zone Senior Championship to be held March 8-10 in Binghamton, N.Y.
