NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s Charlie Cole will come home from the Summer Olympics with a little extra weight in his luggage. The former Maritime Rowing Club member won a bronze medal with the United States men’s four in the final day of rowing Saturday in Eton, England.
Cole and teammates Scott Gault, Henrik Rummel and Glen Ochal finished third. Britian won, followed by Australia. The United States crew, which won its previous two heats, fell into third place at the outset and held there. Britain won in 6:03.97, followed by Australia in 6:05.19. The U.S. finished in 6:07.2.
“Certainly I think people have to be excited about the work we’ve put in,” Cole told USRowing. “We put in a lot of hard work since last year. We’re young guys and we have a lot to look forward to and we’ll have to think about and reflect on our performance and let the dust settle. But we have a lot to be confident about, and hopefully, a lot to look forward to in our rowing careers.”
Cole began rowing for New Canaan High School in 1999 under Yan Vengerovskiy at Maritime. He continued his career at Yale and Oxford University. He has been a member of the national team for nine years and finished fourth with the men’s four at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
The bronze medal in the four was the first for the United States since 1992. The U.S. finished with 17 medals in rowing, including a gold in the Women’s Eight.
