New Canaan's Whirlwind Divers Dominate Regional Meet

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan-based Whirlwind Diving dominated the Junior 1 Region Championships last weekend, winning the team title and qualifying 22 divers for the upcoming Zones championships.

Seven Whirlwind divers earned All-American honors, the most in the long coaching career of Joe Somma. Whirlwind’s boys 16-18-year-old divers took four of the seven podium spots in the one-meter, and four of the top-five spots on 3-meters.

Darien’s Jake Bowtell won two events. The other divers to earn All-American status were Greenwich’s Andrew Bologna, New Canaan’s Kylie Towbin and Bobby Ross, and Stamford’s Sean Burston, Rachel Burston and Kirsten Parkinson.

Piper Van Wagenen (Darien), Whirlwind’s sole 11-and-under competitor at this meet, had a fourth place finish on 1-meter and tied for second on 3-meter.

Other divers for Whirlwind who fared well at the Region meet included Anne Farley, Claire Ross, Owen Stevens, Wiley Schmidt, Kevin Bradley, Genevieve Angerame, Allison Courtney, Sophia Rapp, Melinda Henesy, Timothy Luz, Cameron Rhind, Tom Kalinowski, Caleigh Kupersmith, Olivia Park, Marie Facin, Kyle O’Donnell and Matthew Mintz.
