Norwalk Grizzlies 8th Graders Rip Ridgefield

NORWALK, Conn. – Terrence Bates scored two touchdowns and Harrison Hefferan added 112 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead the Norwalk Grizzlies 8th grade football team over Ridgefield, 30-12, in a Fairfield County Football League game.

Bates (115 yards rushing) and Hefferan led a strong running attack for the Grizzlies (1-1). Spencer Jacobsen added 66 yards rushing, Brendan Brown rushed for 28 and quarterback Tyler McMillian ran for 25. Bates, Hefferan and Brown also ran for PATs.

Nick LaFranco (eight tackles) led a fired-up defense. Anthony Wooton forced a fumble, recovered one and had four tackles. Other defensive stars included Caleb Fuller, forced fumble recovery; Sean Sullins, fumble recovery and five tackles; Colby Scoval, three tackles; Hefferan, eight tackles; Bates, four tackles, Joey Laracca, four tackles; Aaron Post, five tackles, and Tyler Welch. Brendan Brown intercepted a pass and Bates had a 40-yard punt return.

Greg Goldstein shared QB duties. Spencer Wellen, Brian Gonzalez and Sean Sullivan played well. Mitchell Bartolo and Evan Cybart shared WR duties with Kevin Rensiler.

In its first game, Norwalk dropped a tough 12-6 contest to Darien. Norwalk moved to the Darien 10-yard line in the fourth quarter to get in position for a game-tying touchdown. A fumble ended the drive and Darien ran out the clock.

LaFranco (eight tackles, two sacks) led the defense. Hefferan (eight tackles), Brown (seven tackles) and Jacobsen (six tackles) also played well. LaRacca, Post, Bates, Gonzalez and Scoval also had strong defensive games.

The Grizzlies moved the ball on offense behind the blocking of Sullins, Anthony Wooton, Wellen and Chris Cassius. Bates rushed for 70 yards, while Hefferan had 55. Jacobsen rushed for 43 yards and scored on a 2-yard run. McMillian started at quarterback and played in the defensive secondary in the second half. Goldstein took over as the quarterback in the second half.

The Grizzlies sixth grade team dropped a 12-0 contest to Fairfield. Offensive standouts included fullback Ben Czaj, quarterback Justin Schneider, Jack Coulter, Harry Falcone and Eddie Donovan. The defense was lead by Ajax Diamandis, Justin Busswell, Ernie Raffa and Deandre Hernandez. Edward Bocanfusso played well.

The Grizzlies 8th grade team meets Fairfield Sunday at 12:30 at Fairfield Warde High School. The 6th graders meet New Canaan Black Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dunning Field.
