Poll: Yankee Fans Outnumber Red Sox Backers In Fairfield County, State

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Boston Red Sox have won three World Series in the the past decade, but that did not change the hearts and minds of baseball lovers in Connecticut as Yankee fans once again outnumber Sox fans in the Nutmeg State, according to the annual Quinnipiac University poll.

Yankee fans outnumber Red Sox fans again in Connecticut thanks in large part to the preferences of people in Fairfield County.

Fans of the Bronx Bombers outnumber Boston diehards by a margin of 43 percent to 38 percent, the poll said. Only 8 percent of Connecticut residents declared themselves as New York Mets fans.

The Red Sox came away victorious in the state in one category, with more women responding as Boston fans by a margin of 44 percent to 42 percent.

Fairfield County put the state firmly into the pro-Yankee territory with a lopsided 57 percent of respondents calling themselves New York fans with only 15 percent supporting the boys from Beantown.

But Hartford, Middlesex, New London, Tolland and Windham Counties are each firmly in Red Sox territory, while Yankee fans just edge out Sox fans in Litchfield and New Haven Counties.

"Boston's World Series victory doesn't mean beans in Connecticut, where more fans back the New York Yankees - the favorites for four years now," Douglas Schwartz, director of the Quinnipiac University poll, said in a statement. "Men and women have shifted, but the overall result is little changed. The Yankees huge margin in Fairfield County gives them a statewide edge."

The poll was conducted from Feb. 26 to March 2, as Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,146 Connecticut adults. The poll's margin of error is 2.1 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cellphones to conduct the poll.
