STAMFORD, Conn. Swimmers from around the region took the plunge Saturday to beat the heat and cancer at the sixth annual Stamford-Greenwich Swim Across America.
A total of 204 swimmers took on the .5-mile, 1.5-mile, 3-mile or 5-mile courses at Cummings Point in Stamford to raise $400,000 dollars for cancer research.
The donations from this year's swim will go to the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy for specific research toward curing chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which is currently deemed incurable.
Although the event was not an official race, Luke Lorefice finished first in the .5-mile course, Stephen Holmquist took first in the 1.5 mile course, Tim Inall finished the 3-mile course first and Greg Sargent completed the 5-mile course first.
The top individual fundraisers for the event include:
- Peter Holmquist, Wilton, $17,400
- Peter Carlson, Riverside, $16,300
- Bobby Pruett, Old Greenwich, $12,500
- Andrew Horman, New York, N.Y., $11,900
The teams that raised the most money for the event include:
- Team Kicking Cancer for Karen, Chris and Friends, $33,800
- Team CHEMhOes (Former & current Greenwich High swim team members), $32,100
- Team Peter's Defeaters, $23,700
- Team Cure-Ators, $23,000
Swim Across America is a national organization that holds open water swim events across the country to raise money for cancer research. The organization has raised more than $40 million nationally towards cancer research.
