Three New Canaan Teams Shoot for State Titles

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A whole lot of hardware could be coming home to New Canaan by the end of the day Saturday. The New Canaan High boys lacrosse team, girls lacrosse team and baseball team all play for state championships, and all three took different roads to get there.

Highlighting the day's championship chatter is the boys lacrosse team, which goes up against archrival Darien at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk at 4 p.m. In all the years of showdowns between the two teams, it is just the second time in tournament history the Rams have battled the Blue Wave for the state title. New Canaan fell to Darien in the 2008 Class M final, 11-4.

It is the second year in a row the boys lacrosse team has reached the finals . New Canaan lost to Wilton in last year's title game, 12-2. The Rams are 3-5 all-time in state championship games and are looking for their first title since 2003.

The girls lacrosse team will play for its second state title in three years on Saturday. The top-ranked Rams take on Wilton in the Class M championship at Bunnell High School in Stratford at 2 p.m.

The girls lacrosse team was a perfect 16-0 in the regular season, but was handed its first loss by rival Darien in the conference semifinals. New Canaan got its revenge earlier this week when it edged Darien, 9-6, in the state quarterfinals.

The game with the most history on the line is being played in Middletown at noon. The baseball team aims to cap an incredible run when it takes on Fitch High School of Groton for the Class L title.

The baseball team struggled through a 10-10 season and was ranked 24th in the tournament. But a 49-hit explosion over four games has the Rams just one win away from their first state baseball championship since 1950. It is also the first time since 1972 that New Canaan has reached baseball's championship game.

The New Canaan Daily Voice will have full coverage of all three games on Sunday morning.
