Malloy and Foley both spell disaster. No reason to vote for either tragic character. CT is a screwed up place. Its elected representatives and its people are the strangest critters I have ever witnessed or lived amongst. Life is weird in CT! And that is its only enduring and defining characteristic. Why make a big deal of this. Hedge fund managers routinely employ fraudulent tactics to optimize earnings and skirt SEC/IRS scrutiny. All the "big boys" know the ropes otherwise they'd still be little boys working in the trenches minus their Greenwich mansions and Miller motorcars. Wealth is generally not earned legitimately. It is the result of brilliantly conceived and deceptive schemes -- the long-standing leitmotif of Wall Street. There are exceptions to the rule, but they are rare and few. Honesty is not, and has never been, the hallmark of the trade. "Poor" guy got caught ... better luck trick or treating next time. Boo! View Comment
Investigation of Greenwich Public Schools administrative procedures and practices is long overdue. Substitute teachers, in particular, are often treated like expendable non-entities by teachers and administrators. They are rarely afforded the respect their role merits. Those that accept special-ed assignments are frequently jerked around by para-professionals and sped teachers that provide inaccurate and/or incomplete instructions. Ultimately, the sub that tries his best to make sense out of this convoluted protocol will be faulted for failure to
follow instructions and summarily removed from SubFinder for future assignments. The sub soon discovers that since he is not considered a Town employee and is not represented by the teacher's union, he has no recourse or rights to seek redress. The system is immune to ameliorative intervention and subs continue to get the short end of the stick. Investigative reporters should
open this can of worms and reveal this reality. We should not tolerate this vestige of feudalism to victimize dedicated substitute teachers any longer. View Comment
The answer is not guns. The answer is understanding the reason(s) that trigger such incidents. Guns are merely symptoms of the dis-ease. And disease cannot be cured by treating symptoms. They can only be cured by understanding and treating the cause(s). Teachers need to become more "human." They need to express caring, kindness, and understanding that enables students to feel comfortable and non-defensive. It is in mutual understanding and camaraderie that productive relationships flourish and not in condescension and intimidation. Schools are a microcosm of the "real" world. Most of the pathologies that abridge the precepts of civility are germinated by developmental dichotomies in so-called advanced civilizations and by ignorance elsewhere. Be human. Show care and understanding. View Comment
You've got to be kidding! Unless this is a campaign fundraiser ruse it should rightfully be a no-cost event to disseminate his vision to his constituents. Perhaps it should be retitled the RTC Sycophant Summit. View Comment
The woman makes me sick. She is infected by the GOP virus known as sychophantitus that is flagrant throughout the Gold Coast aside from being the most gorgeous looking undocumented beauty queen in the universe. Please don't tell Barbara Starr of CNN about her arch rival. Barbara is of course the undisputed, drop dead gorgeous beauty extant. The question is: Is Barbara more handsome than beautiful? Is she a metrosexual monstrosity, of simply the definition of glamour and feminity. Cast your vote here. View Comment
This woman turns my stomach. She is little more than another member-in-good-standing with the Gold Coast GOP troops, and a remarkably capable sycophant. Are there an independent voices to be heard? View Comment
Westport has a great team, but Cal obviously has a greater one. Let's face it, New England as a whole doesn't hold a candle to California. It's a more progressive place that excels in many areas, including (not surprisingly) athletics. New England, for the most part, exists in a time warp. View Comment
Why the subterfuge to identify academic underachievers? It's not school lunch programs that are at issue. It is test scores. Why not be "politically incorrect" and identify the underachievers as predominantly minority students from public housing and low-income neighborhoods. The rest of the politically motivated pitch is banter to present a pretext designed to impress mainstream Greenwich constituency that we are in "good hands" as our educational guardians assiduously discern and reveal the paucity of the system. It's 90% buzz and bs and 10% of substantive value. Teachers can only do so much to motivate student desire to learn. Parents need to "get on the stick" and encourage their underachievers to treasure the value of education and not depreciate it by the indifferent attitudes of their "students" and/or by blaming schools for failing to educate. Will Ouiji Board Vodka be next?
While multiple distillations undoubtedly improve quality, I am not entirely convinced that diamond (Herkimer or otherwise) filtration results in any qualitative improvement. In terms of psychic energy, crystals have long been thought to posses paranormal energy. Thus, it is this aspect of his marketing pitch that is most intriguing. Of course, the biker crowd should gravitate to the skull packaging -- adding another angle to his demographic targeting. Good luck Mr. A! View Comment
Health is more valuable than all the wealth in hedge fund heaven and/or hades, the bull corrales of Wall Street, and all the world's most grandiose art collections (Cohen's notwithstanding) combined. Keep the faith Fred ... and be well. We need more examples like Pope Francis to propagate compassion and humility, not to mention civility.
I am not a proponent of the NRA nor do I have any interest in guns. I do not think making gun ownership illegal or requiring a background check will safeguard sane society from the insane. As is the case with drug enforcement, making guns contraban will not effectively preclude access to lethal weapons by those committed to committing heinous acts. The social experiment we are all a part of will always have uncontrolled variables, including chronic and/or sudden-onset mental aberration. Minors. like Lanza, should be assiduously monitored and taught by parents to respect the sanctity of humanity and all life. If that had been done, Lanza could have owned an arsenal without endangering anyone. View Comment
As an acquaintance of Werner I admired both his knowledge and gracious manner. He was a genuine gentleman without pretense. I extend my sincerest condolences to the Pfister family and, in particular, to his brother with whom I was also acquainted. Best wishes to all. -- Harry Dill View Comment
