Air Quality Alert Issued For New Canaan As Humid Day Gives Way To Storms

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- An air quality alert has been issued for Fairfield County Thursday, which is expected to be warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms and flooding later in the day.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Action Day in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. An Air Quality Action Day means that ground level ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.

Thursday is expected to be partly sunny and humid, with a high of 89, according to the National Weather Service. There will be increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon into the night. The storms could produce heavy rain and gusty winds. There is also the chance for localized flash flooding, but the main threat is from damaging winds.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue into Thursday night, when the chance of precipitation will be 60 percent. The low will be around 65.

Friday is expected to see continued showers and thunderstorms, as well as a cooling off from the heat. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent. The high during the day will be near 69. There is a chance of heavy rain with the storms, as well as flash flooding. The rain will continue into Friday night, when the low will be around 64.

There is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday morning, as well as patchy fog before 9 a.m., but the rain is expected to taper off early in the day. Otherwise Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Saturday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 65.

Sunday is expected to be sunny, with a high near 85. Sunday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 67.
