Zumba Zooms to Top of Exercise Craze

Are you looking for the best workout ever? Who isn't. But look no further. The workout craze known as Zumba® is taking over the country.

National Women’s Health & Fitness Day is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event, and women of all ages -- and shapes and sizes -- are invited to celebrate at The Ridgefield Playhouse by participating in an on-stage Zumba® dance-workout, Wednesday, September 29. Some say Zumba® is addictive and, center stage at The Ridgefield Playhouse, it will be a unique experience.

Fitness trainer, "Beto" Perez, stumbled upon the concept of Latin-inspired dance-fitness in his native Colombia in the mid-90s when he walked into his aerobics class and realized he had forgotten his aerobics music. Thinking quickly, he grabbed the tapes he had in his backpack, which consisted of songs he loved -- traditional Latin salsa and merengue music he listened to all his life. But it was a challenge to improvise a whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics music. He clearly rose to the challenge. From this last-minute improvisation Zumba® was born.

Activities start at 6:30 p.m. and the workout kicks off at 7:30. The group exercise will be led by trained Zumba® instructors from Ridgefield Fitness. Participants will work out to hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow dance moves, or just watch and learn.

Pre-Zumba® activities include wine and cheese from Cellar XV and 109 Cheese and hair. There will also be make-up, skin care, fashion and jewelry information with representatives from Adam Broderick Salon & Spa. This event is underwritten by Adam Broderick Salon & Spa, ageLOC by LYS and Ridgefield Prevention Council.

More than 1,400 groups across the country will host women’s health and fitness events on September 29 to focus attention on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for women. With life’s demands pulling women in all directions, the Zumba® event at the Playhouse provides a fun, educational respite.

Zumba® programs have become a workout revolution and considered the single most influential movement in the fitness industry. Zumba® fanatics achieve long-term benefits while doing their one-hour workout-dance routine that burns calories and energizes the body and mind.
