Jeep Geek's Passion Saved his Life

Ask Scott Turian at Scap Chrysler Jeep in Fairfield just about anything relating to a Jeep, and he'll have an answer. If you ask him about their safety performance, he'll show you pictures.

"I've worked for Jeep since I was 19," said Turian, 33. "And I owe my life to the product."

He earned the title "Jeep Geek" many years ago from a customer impressed by his knowledge of all things Jeep. She also dubbed him "Accessory Dude," but that title didn't stick.

On Feb. 13, 2006, the "Jeep Geek" unexpectedly took his 2004 Grand Cherokee off-road. Turian nodded off while driving and veered into the shoulder, hit a snow bank and sailed over the guardrail. By the time the car came to a halt, the roof was pushed in and his hand was through the windshield, still clutching the wheel. He keeps a stack of photos from the accident inside his desk to illustrate the narrative.

"I climbed out of the car. I didn't break a bone, but I had my hand stuck in the windshield. The scars are on my hand and wedding ring to prove it," Turian said. The rigid column of steel holding his seat belt kept the roof from fully collapsing and crushing him.

The scariest moments came when Turian couldn't find his daughter's car seat. He was too shocked to remember she wasn't with him. He eventually crawled to the highway, where an ambulance met him.

Jeep's have undergone an evolution since Turian's accident. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first major overhaul of the vehicle since 2005. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the new model with the top safety pick. Turian notes the frame is 146 percent more rigid than previous models. It now also sports an entirely independent suspension.
