Perez opened Advanced DermAesthetics at 39 Pine St. in New Canaan. After years of commuting to New York, New Haven, Danbury, Mount Kisco and other locales, Perez decided nearly a year ago to build her brand in the town she calls home.

“Sometimes God works in interesting ways,’’ said Perez, a native of Puerto Rico. “It was not something I had on my radar. I was comfortable working with my partners in Danbury for 13 years. I thought it was time.”

Besides wanting to be closer to her home, Perez also felt that the practice of medicine had become high volume and fast paced. “It became something where you have to sit back and think is this the way I want to practice or do I want to keep my values?" she said.

After wrestling with the decision for a few months, she opted to have her partners buy her out of the practice. She set forth on opening her own practice, and left her job on Aug. 31. She was back in business a month later.

“I’m not going to ever stop practicing medicine,’’ she said. "I love what I am doing and know that with my training and experience I will be at the top of my game where I plan to stay for many more years. I’m going to die with the scalpel in my hands. I’m too young to retire.”

Perez said many of her former patients moved with her. Residents from Rhode Island, New York and upstate Connecticut have visited her office in New Canaan. “I’m very happy with the response of the community,’’ she said. “I feel very welcome here. I’ve had a great reception.”

One of Perez’s unique traits as a dermatologist is her surgical skills. She works frequently with cancer patients and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery. She is a graduate of the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Medicine and completed post-doctoral training at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and New York University. She is certain this is her last stop in her career as a physician.

“When I make my mind up, it’s made up,’’ Dr. Perez said. “I’m able to have a happy medium between home and work life. This is the right time to do this, and this is the right place.”
