Tara A. Clancy, a literacy remediation expert, started NurturingLiteracy.com to help readers, especially those who struggle, get the support they need.

“The best way to help a struggling reader is to get help before the child is showing obvious signs of struggle," Clancy said. "Research has shown that the earlier reading challenges are identified, the better the outcomes are for the child."

To help parents get a handle on the situation, Clancy has created a Reading Health Questionnaire. In less than five minutes, parents will know whether their child is showing signs of a reading problem.

Research says children who have not developed proficient reading skills by the end of third grade will continue to fall further behind as readers -- and also in all subject areas, Clancy said.

Clancy blogs at Nurturingliteracy.com to share her perspective and ideas for helping parents nurture their children's literacy development, especially when it has been sidelined by reading challenges.

She uses stories from both her personal life and professional experience to illustrate the wide-ranging effects of reading challenges on a child's mind, body and spirit.

Since graduating from Teachers College, Columbia University over two decades ago, Clancy has worked with hundreds of struggling readers. In both schools and in private practice she administers literacy evaluations and provides program support.

She holds teaching certifications in reading in both CT and NY and is a member of the International Dyslexia Association.
