The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a festive VIP cocktail party for all sponsors on the second floor of the Palace Theatre, followed by a performance by Vereen on the main stage at 8 p.m.

The 2016 Arts Ovation Award Honoree at the gala is RFR Realty LLC. RFR is a generous contributor to both the Stamford Center for the Arts and the Stamford Boys & Girls Club. Arts and education are a major focus of RFR’s community-directed philanthropy.

RFR’s donation to the Stamford Center for Arts will be directed to the organization’s Summer Arts Program for children. RFR's managing director Margaret Carlson has recently joined the Board of Directors at the Palace Theatre.

Come join the Palace Theatre in honoring Carlson and RFR by assisting in its educational efforts and outreach through the Gala. Some proceeds from Spotlight Soirée will support the Palace Theatre’s Arts Education programs designed for thousands of area youth ages 4-18, many of whom will be from the area’s underserved population.

These programs provide children and teens with the chance to express themselves creatively through music, dance, drama and playwriting. In the midst of fun, they learn other skills that are important in academic and life success, such as confidence, problem-solving, teamwork, perseverance and focus.

Few entertainers today are as accomplished or as versatile as Ben Vereen. His legendary performances transcend time and have been woven into the fabric of this country’s artistic legacy. His first love and passion will always be the stage.

“The theatre was my first training ground. It taught me discipline, dedication and appreciation of hard work,” Vereen has said.

On Broadway, Vereen has appeared in "Wicked," "Fosse," "I’m Not Rappaport," "Hair," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Pippin," "Grind," "Jelly’s Last Jam" and "A Christmas Carol." His role as the leading player in the original production of "Pippin" led to a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Vereen's memorable roles on television include Chicken George in "Roots" and Louis Armstrong in" Louis Armstrong." On film: "Funny Lady" and "All That Jazz." He recently was featured with Richard Gere and Steve Buscemi in "Time out of Mind."
