The Daily Voice is closing out 2017 by looking back at some of the most popular stories of the year. A home security website released a report in June, naming several Fairfield County towns as among the safest cities in the country to raise children.
FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Greenwich has been named the safest place to raise a child in the United States in a new ranking, with several other Fairfield County communities also making the cut.
In the home security website SafeWise's new ranking of "The 30 Safest Cities to Raise a Child," Greenwich nabbed the top spot. Nine Connecticut towns made the list, including four from Fairfield County.
"The safest cities for raising families tend to skew towards coastal New England towns, where quiet, suburban neighborhoods have less crime, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and enjoy well-funded school systems," said SafeWise.
Communities were assessed based on reported sex offender concentration, state graduation rates, overall school quality ranking, and FBI violent crime data. SafeWise also considered parks and recreational opportunities, as well as special programs for kids and families. Cities with fewer than 10,000 residents were eliminated, as were those that did not report crime numbers to the FBI.
In placing Greenwich at the No. 1 spot on the list, SafeWise noted, "Consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in America, this community has private beaches, plenty of parks and recreation programs, and an island sanctuary to help residents escape from the bustle of ordinary life."
The next Fairfield County community that made the list was Fairfield, coming in at No. 3.
"Fairfield not only subsidizes neighborhood programs that focus on creating a stronger sense of community but also heavily invests in the public school system," SafeWise said.
Ridgefield was named the 15th safest city to raise children.
"The school system is noted for a fantastic band and an arts program that would be music to any parent’s ears," SafeWise said of Ridgefield.
Westport was the last Fairfield County town to make the top 30.
"Snuggled against the Long Island Sound, Westport has some of the best middle schools in the nation, snagging multiple Blue Ribbon Awards from the Department of Education," said SafeWise.
The other Connecticut towns to make the top 30 were Southington (No. 18), Simsbury (No. 24), Cheshire (No. 25), Milford (No. 26) and Glastonbury (No. 27).
A few more Fairfield County towns just missed out on the top 30 and were named honorable mentions. Darien came in at No. 36, New Canaan was named No. 40, and Newtown was named No. 41.
