STAMFORD, Conn. — Friends and family of a Stamford High School senior who had a leg amputated after a freak car accident Wednesday, Dec. 27, have set up a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses.

Erwin Hernandez was working at Table 104 on Long Ridge Road in Stamford when a car driven by a valet crashed through a wall and into the kitchen, according to News 12.

He suffered serious injuries to his leg, which was later amputated, according to the GoFundMe page .

“Erwin is an incredibly hard-working and motivated senior at Stamford High School,” a statement on the GoFundMe page says. “He has never had things easy, and has always risen to meet any challenge presented to him.

“In his few short years in the United States, he has managed to learn English so well that he has become a mentor to others and has earned grades worthy of membership to the National Honor Society. He is the type of student who spends his study hall volunteering to help students in other classrooms and frequently tutors students at a local elementary school.”

Friends have already raised more than $7,700 of their $150,000 goal.

“Life has presented Erwin with another challenge. If there is anybody who can rise to meet such a challenge it is Erwin,” the statement reads. “However, he will need the collective support of all of us. This go fund me page has been established to be able to provide Erwin with some financial support for the long road to recovery that lies ahead of this incredible young man.”

The restaurant remains closed "until further notice ... due to unfortunate circumstances," according to its website.
