NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Nicki Dubiago will represent New Canaan at the 2013 Special Olympics Connecticut Fall Sports Festival as part of a sailing team on Saturday and Sunday in Stonington.

“I started really young (with Special Olympics) and my parents volunteered,” Dubiago, 38, said in a statement.

She credits her family and their support for putting her on the path to become an accomplished athlete and a poised woman known for her talents, ambition and enthusiasm.

When Dubiago’s parents and younger sister Alanna attend competitions to cheer her on, she says it always makes her “feel better.” Although she now lives apart from her family, her connection with them remains strong.

One of the things Dubiago is most proud of, in addition to the Special Olympics medals she has earned, is being an aunt to her sister Alanna’s 4-year-old son Brayden, she said in the statement.

Dubiago also competed in the Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games this past June. She won first place in the 100-meter backstroke, second place in the 25-meter breast stroke, third place in the 50-meter backstroke and fourth place in the freestyle relay event.

In addition to sports, Dubiago also enjoys attending dances organized by the Special Olympics.
