NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan Public Schools may be closed for winter break this week, but Molly Tricomi still has her head in the books.

Although many of her New Canaan High School classmates have left town for trips as part of the winter break, Molly, 16, a junior, was at the New Canaan Library on Tuesday, preparing for a big history exam.

“I just came back from visiting Boston College,” said Molly, studying with friend and fellow junior Ekaterina Dyakova. “It was fun, but it was really, really cold.”

It’s good to be home and doing some study prep without having to be up at her usual time, Molly said. “I got up at 9 a.m.”

Ekaterina says she also enjoyed the extra rest. She stayed home to prepare for the SAT exam next month. Still, “it’s nice to sleep in,” she said. “I got up at 8 a.m. I usually have to wake up at 6 a.m.”

The girls expect they’ll also visit friends during the week off.

The library's atmosphere during break week is calm, New Canaan Library Programming Director Susan LaPerla said. Most teenage programs slow down for the week, but story times and programs for younger kids continue as normal. The library is also hosting a chess program for younger kids.

Jujiang Metcalf, 8, of Norwalk, a student at Stamford’s Northeast School, was among the kids happy to get some time away from class. She and her mom, Savannah, a teacher at the Stamford elementary school, loaded up on books and a few DVDs to enjoy after her time at the library’s chess program.

“It feels good not having to have homework and get to do other things instead,” Jujiang said.
