Boaters On Long Island Sound Advised To Be Vigilant Of Whales

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- With the recent sightings of humpback and beluga whales in Long Island Sound, there is concern among officials that the reaction and behavior of Fairfield County boaters could endanger a whale.

It is illegal to approach a right whale within 500 yards, unless granted specific exemption or authorization.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is reminding all boaters that marine mammals are protected by the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Boaters are advised to follow the NOAA Whale Watching Guidelines to help minimize chances of harassing or injuring whales and violating federal law. The guidelines apply to all large whales from Maine through Virginia, except North Atlantic right whales.
