Witnesses told CBS New York that lifeguards called swimmers out of the water as New York City Parks Department officials investigated.

Some people said they saw at least six sharks near the shore that were at least two feet long, News 12 reports.

Officials said they closed parts of the beach out of caution. Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium experts say most sharks are harmless to humans but the sighting is a reminder of the amazing ocean life, News 12 reports.

CBS New York reports that experts say the sharks were likely basking sharks looking to feed their young.
