New Canaan Readies For Saturday's Sidewalk Sale

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Thousands of people looking for bargains or just to enjoy a day in a quaint New England downtown are expected to visit New Canaan this Saturday for the annual Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale.

The event, now in its 47th year, is the biggest event of the year for the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. More than 150 merchants, including about 75 percent of the shops in New Canaan, will participate, selling items under the sunshine and outside of the walls of traditional stores.

“They (retailers) love seeing customers who they haven’t seen in a while, and it’s a fun day all around,” chamber Executive Director Tucker Murphy said. “There are people who come from out of town every year just for our sidewalk sales. We start getting calls in early May.”

Murphy said the sale, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., also allows stores to clear out merchandise to make room for fall and winter sales.

The event traditionally was the third Saturday of July, Murphy said, but Darien opted two years ago to have its sale on the same day. This year, both towns will have their sales on the same day, but Murphy said she’s encouraged shoppers to go to Darien earlier in the week since their sidewalk sale is a multi-day event.

“Go (to Darien) on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s the day you want to be in New Canaan,” she said.

Portions of Main and Elm streets and all of Forest Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.

The fair also will feature the return of the pop-up park on South Avenue near Morse Court, which will serve as an al fresco food court. There also will be entertainment for the kids at Karl Chevrolet, face painting and music from the New Canaan Town Band and the Clam Diggers Dixie Land Band. Musician EJ Coulicoundis, who performed at the opening of the pop-up park last week, will return to sing at the event.

Murphy asks that people leave their dogs at home during the fair.
